Agora

The Original Social Network

In ancient Greece, the agora was where people traded, heard the news, argued politics, discussed business, exchanged ideas, and generally involved themselves in everybody else’s affairs.

Civilization had invented the comment section. Only with columns. And probably better coffee.

What are people talking about?

Stories, reactions, opinions, and the occasional civilized disagreement.

You don’t need Facebook. You don’t need an account. Pull up a chair and join in.

Debate like Greeks. Behave like adults. Be civil. Attack the argument, not the person.

From the 1960's I remember people saying "M να βάλεις, όχι Ν!"

I will not translate or explain, but many of your readers will surely understand...

I don’t remember that one! For the sake of this respectable publication, let’s agree the Μ stood for μπαγλαμάς (baglamas)—literally a small Greek stringed instrument, but also slang for a fool or idiot—not the more obvious alternative. 😂 Thank you for sharing it.

If, as we still sometimes do, we stop a bit too far and can't see the traffic light, no problem! The microsecond the light changes, the driver behind us lets us know with his horn. Loudly. Except that Euro cars have such polite, little horns. Mbeep mbeep doesn't intimidate Americans who started driving in the 50s.

Hilarious, as always, and very relatable. We always said, "Where did you get your license, a Cracker Jack's box?"
